Abha and Asir Travel Guide: Saudi Arabia's Green Mountain South
The Saudi Arabia nobody expects: juniper forests, fog rolling over 3,000-metre peaks, stone villages painted in bright geometric patterns, and summer rain while the rest of the Kingdom bakes.
- Abha sits above 2,200 metres; Al Soudah peaks pass 3,000 metres
- Summer brings cloud and rain while the rest of the Kingdom bakes
- Rijal Almaa's stone towers are edged with white quartz patterns
- Abha airport (AHB) is an official eVisa entry airport
A different country, in the same country
Drive the escarpment road up from the Red Sea coast and the temperature falls away. Abha, capital of the Asir region, sits above 2,200 metres; the peaks around Al Soudah pass 3,000 metres - the highest ground in Saudi Arabia. Summer here brings cloud, drizzle and green terraces while Riyadh sits in the high forties, which is why Saudis themselves holiday in Asir. If your picture of the Kingdom is only desert, this is the region that corrects it.
What to see
Rijal Almaa, the stone heritage village in the valley below Abha, is the postcard: multi-storey stone towers edged with white quartz patterns, once a trading post on the route between Yemen and the Hijaz. In Abha itself, the painted houses of the Muftaha art village and the cable cars dropping toward the lake fill an easy day. The Al Soudah parklands - juniper forest, picnic terraces, viewpoints that drop off the escarpment edge into cloud - are the weekend heart of the region.
Asir has its own kitchen and its own patterns: the bright geometric Al-Qatt Al-Asiri wall painting, a UNESCO-listed art form, turns up everywhere from museums to cafes.
When to go and how
June to September is the green season - rain showers, mist, full hotels, book ahead. Winter is crisp and clear at altitude, and cold at night. Abha International Airport (AHB) is one of the Kingdom's eVisa entry airports, with connections through Riyadh and Jeddah; a hire car is close to essential once you arrive, because the region's pleasures are strung along mountain roads.
Pack a layer whatever the month. The rest of Saudi Arabia will not prepare you for an Asir evening.
The visa side
Nothing special is needed - Asir is ordinary domestic tourism once you are in the Kingdom on your tourist eVisa or other visit visa. Just remember the region borders Yemen far to the south; the tourist areas around Abha are well clear of the border zone, and normal travel sense applies.
