First Trip to Saudi Arabia: What to Expect, Wear and Do

Arriving for the first time - the border, the dress code as it actually is today, photography, money, getting around, and the customs that make a first visit easy.

At a glance
  • Tourist women are not required to wear an abaya or cover their hair - modest dress is the working rule
  • Alcohol is prohibited everywhere in the Kingdom, in any quantity
  • The weekend is Friday and Saturday, and shops pause briefly at prayer times
  • Cards and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere

At the border

Arrival is straightforward: passport control, a fingerprint scan and a photograph, and usually a couple of questions about where you are staying and how long for. Have your eVisa printed or on your phone, your return or onward ticket available, and the name of your hotel or host. Most travellers are through in minutes.

What to wear - the current reality

Dress modestly in public: shoulders and knees covered is a good working rule for everyone. Women are not required to wear an abaya or cover their hair as tourists - that rule changed years ago - but loose, modest clothing is both respectful and simply more comfortable. Swimwear belongs at the beach and pool; the Red Sea resorts operate much like resorts anywhere. At religious sites, stricter dress applies and women cover their hair to enter mosque areas.

Photography and privacy

Photograph landscapes, landmarks and your own group freely. Ask before photographing people - especially women and families - and never photograph military sites, government buildings, airports' secure areas or officials. A smile and a gesture toward the camera gets you a yes more often than not; a no costs nothing to respect.

Money, phones and getting around

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and contactless is normal; carry some riyals in cash for small shops and taxis. A local SIM or eSIM from the airport keeps maps and translation in your pocket. In cities, ride-hailing apps are the easiest way around; Riyadh also has a modern metro. Saudi drivers drive on the right, and intercity distances are large - fly between regions rather than assuming a short drive.

Customs that make the trip

The weekend is Friday and Saturday, and daily life pauses briefly at prayer times, when many shops close for a short while. Alcohol is prohibited throughout the Kingdom - do not bring any, in any quantity. Greetings matter: a hand on the heart and 'as-salamu alaykum' opens doors. During Ramadan, expect a slower daytime rhythm, eat and drink discreetly in public during fasting hours, and enjoy the evenings, when the country comes alive.

Common questions

Can I take photos in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, of landmarks, landscapes and your own group. Ask before photographing people, and never photograph military or government sites or officials.

Is Saudi Arabia safe for tourists?

It is one of the region's lowest-crime destinations for visitors. Ordinary awareness applies as anywhere; respecting local customs is what keeps interactions warm.

What should I pack differently for Saudi Arabia?

Modest, loose clothing in breathable fabrics, a layer for aggressively air-conditioned interiors, and sun protection. At religious sites, women should carry a scarf for entering mosque areas.
