Saudi eVisa for US Citizens: The Complete, Simple Guide

US passport holders are fully eligible for the Saudi tourist eVisa - one year, multiple entries, 90 days a stay. What to prepare, how it works, and the few rules that matter.

At a glance
  • US citizens are on the 72-country eVisa list
  • One year, multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit, 180 days per year in total
  • Visa on arrival exists as a backup, but the advance eVisa is the better plan
  • Umrah is included outside Hajj season; paid work is not allowed

Your eligibility, plainly

The United States is on Saudi Arabia's eVisa list, so a US passport holder applies online and skips the embassy entirely. The visa that comes back is valid for one year, allows multiple entries, and lets you stay up to 90 days per visit - with a ceiling of 180 days in total across the year. Your passport needs at least six months of validity when you travel.

What you need to apply

Deliberately little: your passport, a recent photograph on a white background that follows the photo rules, and an email address the issued visa can be sent to. There is no invitation letter, no hotel booking requirement and no interview for the tourist eVisa. The application asks where you expect to stay and your rough dates; answer honestly, because the details should match the passport exactly - name spellings and passport numbers are where applications stumble.

Visa on arrival is your backup, not your plan

US citizens can also get a visa on arrival at Saudi airports. It works, but it means queueing at a kiosk or desk after a long flight, paying there, and accepting the small risk that a system issue turns arrival into a wait. The eVisa in advance costs the same official fee, arrives before you fly, and lets the airline verify you at check-in. We recommend the advance application every time.

What the eVisa lets you do

Tourism anywhere in the Kingdom, visiting friends and family, attending events and conferences as a visitor, and Umrah outside the Hajj season - book the permits in the Nusuk app once the visa is in hand. It does not allow paid work of any kind, and Hajj itself needs the separate Hajj visa through the official Hajj channels. Business meetings are fine on it; employment is not.

Two rules Americans trip over

First, the stay cannot be extended: when your 90 days are done you leave, and on a multiple-entry visa you may return - but the 180-day yearly ceiling still applies across all visits. Second, your visa lives and dies with the passport it was issued against. Renew the passport and you need a new visa, even if the old one still shows months of validity. Carry both facts into your planning and the trip is uneventful in the best way.

Common questions

Can I just get the visa when I land?

Yes, US citizens qualify for visa on arrival. We still recommend the eVisa in advance: same visa, no airport queue, and the airline can verify you before you fly.

I renewed my passport. Is my eVisa still valid?

No. The eVisa is issued against a specific passport; a new passport means a new visa, even if the old visa had months left.

Can I work remotely for my US employer on it?

The tourist eVisa is a visitor visa and does not authorise employment. Short business meetings as a visitor are fine; working in the Kingdom is not.
