Umrah Visa from Dubai: How UAE Residents Actually Apply

Most UAE residents do not need a separate Umrah visa at all. Who travels on a tourist eVisa, who uses the GCC-resident route, and who still needs the dedicated Umrah visa.

At a glance
  • Most UAE residents perform Umrah on the tourist eVisa - no separate Umrah visa needed
  • GCC residents need 6+ months on the passport and 3+ months on the residency
  • Umrah and Rawdah slots are booked separately in the Nusuk app
  • The Haramain train links Jeddah airport, Makkah and Madinah

The short answer for UAE residents

If you live in the UAE, there is a good chance you already hold the only document you need besides your passport: your Emirates residence. Saudi Arabia lets GCC residents apply for the tourist eVisa on the strength of their residency, and that eVisa covers Umrah outside the Hajj season. For a large share of Dubai's residents, the 'Umrah visa from Dubai' is simply this eVisa, applied for online from home.

Who qualifies for which route

Eligibility follows two facts: your passport and your residency. Passports on the 72-country list use the standard tourist eVisa. Every other nationality living in the UAE uses the GCC-resident eVisa, provided the passport has six months or more to run and the UAE residency has at least three months left. GCC citizens themselves need no visa at all. The checker on this site runs your exact combination in seconds.

When the dedicated Umrah visa is the right route

The standalone Umrah visa still matters for people who do not qualify for either eVisa route - for example, visitors to the UAE on a tourist visa rather than residents, or travellers whose residency is about to expire. It is arranged through approved Umrah channels, is single-purpose, and does not allow general tourism. If that is your situation, tell us and we will route you correctly rather than filing the wrong application.

Nusuk: the permit you still need

A visa gets you into the Kingdom; it does not book your Umrah slot. Praying in the Rawdah in Madinah and performing Umrah at busy times run on permits booked in the Nusuk app, and slots in Ramadan and school holidays go quickly. Book permits as soon as your visa is issued, register each traveller separately, and keep the app on the phone you will carry - the permits are checked on entry to the Grand Mosque areas.

From Dubai to the Haramain

Most residents fly: Dubai and Sharjah to Jeddah for Makkah (about an hour by road or the Haramain high-speed train from Jeddah airport), or direct to Madinah. The same train links Madinah, Jeddah and Makkah in under two and a half hours end to end, which has quietly made the two-city Umrah trip far easier than it was. Travel in ihram on the flight if you are heading straight to Makkah - the miqat is announced on board - and keep your visa and permits on your phone and in print.

Common questions

I live in Dubai on a work visa. Which visa do I need for Umrah?

Almost certainly the GCC-resident tourist eVisa: your UAE residency qualifies you, and the eVisa covers Umrah outside Hajj season. Check your passport has six months and your residency three months remaining.

I am visiting Dubai on a tourist visa. Can I do Umrah from here?

The GCC-resident route needs residency, not a visit visa. Your route is either the standard eVisa if your passport is eligible, or the dedicated Umrah visa through approved channels - ask us and we will route you.

When should I book Nusuk permits?

As soon as the visa is issued. Ramadan and holiday slots go first, and each traveller needs their own permits registered in the app.
