Umrah Visa vs Hajj Visa: Two Pilgrimages, Two Very Different Visas

Umrah can be performed most of the year on more than one kind of visa. Hajj happens once a year and only ever on an official Hajj visa. The differences that matter, and the mistake that must never be made.

At a glance
  • Umrah can be performed most of the year; Hajj happens once a year on fixed dates
  • Umrah is possible on a tourist eVisa outside Hajj season, or on a dedicated Umrah visa
  • Hajj is only ever performed on an official Hajj visa through authorised channels
  • Performing Hajj on the wrong visa brings fines, deportation and bans

The core difference

Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage: it can be performed at almost any time of year, takes hours to days, and is a personal journey you arrange yourself. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, performed once a year on fixed dates in the month of Dhul Hijjah, by millions at once - which is why it is organised through quotas, authorised operators and a single official visa. Almost every visa confusion we see comes from treating the two as interchangeable. They are not.

Your visa options for Umrah

There are two sound routes. The tourist eVisa: if you are eligible - by passport or GCC residency - you may perform Umrah on it outside the Hajj season, booking your Umrah and Rawdah time slots on the official Nusuk app once the visa is issued. Or the dedicated Umrah visa: arranged through the official platforms and licensed operators, the route for nationalities outside the eVisa lists. Women may perform Umrah without a mahram under the current rules, travelling in a group or independently as the rules of their route provide.

Your visa options for Hajj: exactly one

Hajj requires a Hajj visa, obtained through the official Hajj channels for your country of residence - the Nusuk Hajj platform for many countries, or authorised Hajj operators where that system applies. Places are quota-limited and allocated well in advance. There is no walk-up route, no agent shortcut, and no other visa type that covers Hajj.

The mistake that must never be made

Performing Hajj on a tourist, visit or Umrah visa is a violation the Saudi authorities police seriously, with penalties that include fines, deportation and bans on returning - and every year, travellers who were sold the idea by unscrupulous agents learn this at the worst possible moment. If anyone offers you Hajj on the wrong visa, walk away. Our Hajj guidance page explains the legitimate route in full.

Which should you choose?

If your goal is Umrah and you hold an eligible passport, the tourist eVisa is usually the simplest path - one visa also covers touring the Kingdom before or after. If you are not eligible, the dedicated Umrah visa is your route. And if your goal is Hajj, begin with the official channels for your country as early as you can: demand far exceeds the quota, and the preparation is measured in months, not days.

Common questions

Can I perform Hajj on a tourist eVisa?

No - never. Hajj requires a dedicated Hajj visa obtained through the official channels for your country of residence. Anyone offering otherwise is putting you at serious risk.

Which visa is better for Umrah?

If you are eVisa-eligible, the tourist eVisa is usually simplest and also covers touring. If not, the dedicated Umrah visa arranged through official platforms and licensed operators is your route.

When should I start preparing for Hajj?

Months ahead. Places are quota-limited and allocated in advance through official channels, so begin as early as the system for your country allows.
