What to Pack for Saudi Arabia: The Complete Checklist

What to Pack for Saudi Arabia: The Complete Checklist

Modest clothing, desert layers, the right plug, and the paperwork that actually matters. A packing list built from how the trip really works.

At a glance
  • Plugs are Type G - the same as the UAE and UK
  • Prescription medicines: original packaging plus the prescription itself
  • A headscarf is needed for women entering mosques
  • Desert nights and Saudi air-conditioning both require one warm layer

Documents and digital first

Passport with six months or more of validity; your visa printed AND on your phone (data fails at the wrong moments); travel insurance documents - medical cover is built into the eVisa, but keep your own policy details too if you carry extra cover. Photograph your passport's data page and keep it in cloud storage. If you are driving, bring your licence and check whether your rental needs an international permit. Pilgrims: Nusuk permits on the phone you will actually carry, plus a printed backup.

Clothing: the modest, practical edit

Loose, opaque clothing that covers shoulders and knees is the public standard for everyone. Lightweight natural fibres for the heat; one warm layer - desert nights, mountain towns and Saudi air-conditioning all run cold. Women: an abaya is not required for visitors, but many pack one loose over-layer for mosque visits and conservative settings, plus a headscarf for entering mosques. Men: long trousers for evenings and official places; swimwear only for pools and beach clubs. Comfortable closed walking shoes earn their space - old towns and heritage sites are not heel country.

The small things that save trips

Saudi Arabia uses Type G plugs - the three-pin British style, same as the UAE and UK - so most Gulf and British travellers need no adapter; everyone else should pack one. Add a power bank (long desert days), serious sun protection, a refillable bottle, and any prescription medicines IN their original packaging with the prescription itself: some common medicines elsewhere are controlled here, and the paperwork is the difference between a non-event and a problem. Our prohibited-items guide covers the sensitive categories.

By trip type

Umrah: ihram garments, unscented toiletries for the state of ihram, a small bag for shoes inside the Haram, and patience-friendly layers for night prayers. Desert trips (AlUla, Edge of the World): a hat that stays on in wind, sunglasses, and a scarf or shemagh against sun and sand. Red Sea: reef-safe sunscreen, swim gear for the beach clubs, and a light cover-up for moving between water and public areas. Business: one formal notch above your usual - presentation is read as respect.

What to leave behind

Alcohol in any form, pork products, and anything on the prohibited list - the separate guide has the full picture. Leave the drone unless you have prior approval arranged; leave printed material that insults the Kingdom or its religion; and leave tight, sheer or slogan-heavy clothing that you would spend the trip adjusting. The list is short, the reasoning is consistent, and packing inside it is easy once you know it exists.

Common questions

Do I need an abaya in my bag?

Not required for visitors. Many women pack one loose over-layer anyway for mosques and conservative settings - it is the most useful single garment on the trip.

Can I bring my regular medication?

Usually, with the paperwork: original packaging, trip-appropriate quantity, and your prescription or a doctor's letter. Controlled categories need checking against the SFDA lists before you fly - see our prohibited items guide.

What adapter do I need?

Type G (three square pins), identical to the UK and UAE. US and EU travellers need an adapter; almost nobody else does.
